I was first introduced to Molly O'keefe with Everything I Left Unsaid and loved it. Ever since then I knew I just liked Molly's writing style and stories. When I saw The Heart of It, I was instantly pulled in by the cover. Yes, I'm one of those people who will pick up a book just because of the cover. Judge me all you want, but you can't argue that it's not a good cover.Gabe is a successful children's book author. He doesn't go unnoticed, being over six feet tall, built and his red hair. One wouldn't be able to tell that he's still struggling from something that happened to him as a child. Hiring an escort, he meets her at a bar one night for a little flirting to ease into the situation before they go back to his room.
"I want you. I can't imagine wanting anyone more than I want you."

The Heart Of It edition by M O'Keefe Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This is a well-written novella about two damaged people lurching toward each other in fits and starts. From the outset, Ms. O'Keefe smoothly builds tension that rockets readers through interchange after interchange, straining to uncover bits and pieces of the protagonists' mental and emotional obstacles to a relationship they each desire but repeatedly sabotage, avoid, or reject. Although the story ends before broaching Happily Ever After, the hint that it's within reach continues to tease and tantalize readers, leaving us craving (in a very good way) just one more peek.
This was a touching and emotional surprise. A novella about Gabe, a man that suffered sexual abuse as a child and an escort named Elena that he hires. I found this such an interesting and unique story and was very touched emotionally by it. I wish this had been a full length novel. The author is a good storyteller and I felt there was so much more story to tell. It leaves you with an open ending and in my mind I give them the HEA that I feel they deserve. Maybe someday Ms. O'Keefe could return to this novella and expand it into the truly amazing book that this novella shows that it could be.
Gabe and Elena’s story is a reminder that first appearances can so often be deceiving, and a tale of courage, bravery, letting down walls, being vulnerable and authentic, and taking a leap of faith. This author evokes such a deep well of emotion, swirling in and around the reader that she nearly drowns in the dark pain, quiet frustration and panicked desperation, then infuses such beautiful healing, self-actualization and all encompassing love, finally leaving the reader’s heart mended and full to bursting! No, we don’t get all the details of a happily ever after, because the author leaves the finer points to the reader’s imagination, but we know without doubt that Gabe and Elena will work out their happy ending together. Don’t miss this amazing, heartwarming read!
Molly O'Keefe is a seriously talented author with the gift of beautiful prose, haunting characters and a style of writing that feels like you are holding your breath waiting for what is coming next. She is a master at crafting intimate scenes that are riveting.
Here we have two damaged characters who push each other's boundaries. My only quibble, aside from a couple of typos, is the pacing of the last part of the story.
After two books, O'Keefe is on my list of authors to follow and I am looking forward to going on many more literary adventures with her. Don't worry about the laundry, Molly. Keep writing!
This Author has a real way with words. "The Heart Of It' is not a happily ever after book like you would expect. Its more, so much more.
It's two shattered broken people trying to make it through life, coming together in pain and heartbreak. They notice the pain of the other and try to fix it, heal the other person.
This is my first book by this Author & will definitely not be my last. I don't want to give to much away in my review. I want other readers to go in being open, with no expectations, to feel how this book touchs you. Makes you think.
I kind of wished there was an "Epilogue". In another way I don't, the ending leaves the possibilities wide open. As much as your mind and even heart can imagine.
I would recommend this book. 🏆
I'm not really sure what to say about The Heart of It. It's a short story/novella so I expected things to move swiftly, but I felt like I was reading an idea for a whole novel that the author didn't finish and decided to release in the abbreviated form. The character development and pacing were fine until about 60% of the novella at which point the author fast-forwards two months, then another two weeks, then three months, and then one year, at which point H, h, and her son have a reunion and their HEA. I was also disappointed that the last 20% of my kindle book was a sample of a previously released M. O'Keefe novel. OTOH, I only paid $.99 for The Heart Of It, so I guess I can't complain too much.
I am sitting here with a puzzled expression on my face..so unsure of what just happened. I am giving this book three stars because, at first, I was very intrigued. It as an interesting story line and grabbed me right away. I was rightly excited and reading quickly at which time came the moment of 'ugly face confusion'. For me, it seemed to have skipped chapters... like I was missing some pertinent information. The ending for me was not completed.. not fulfilling. I was left wanting more. I liked the writing style and again was very interested.. it just fell short for me. I feel like this was such a missed opportunity or that it wasn't finished. I don't mean to be disrespectful and I understand the work that the author put in to writing this.. just my opinion.
